What They Found Useful

MB

Martin B.

British expatriate, Bangkok — April 2025

"I attended the household numbers workshop in March. I had never sat down and actually put all our outgoings in one place before — irregular ones included. The template they use forces you to be thorough in a way that a spreadsheet you design yourself often isn't. The facilitator was patient when one section took longer than expected. I came away with something I could actually show my wife and discuss."

"The retirement income programme was longer than I expected — four months — but that turned out to be sensible. There is quite a lot to read through if you are going to understand how SSO contributions interact with a provident fund and a private annuity product. I would not have had the patience to get through all of it in a weekend. The printed companion volume is genuinely useful as a reference."

"We have baht savings, euro savings from my time in France, and a small French state pension that will eventually arrive. Understanding how those three things sit alongside each other was genuinely difficult before this programme. The session on long-period currency value was the most useful — not advice on what to do, but a clear framework for reading what is already there."

Sirada K.

Thai national, Bangkok — March 2025

"I came to the household numbers workshop partly out of curiosity and partly because my husband and I had never actually agreed on what our household spends in a year. The two-session format worked well — the first session was mostly explanation and the second was the actual work. The reflection section at the end — writing down what surprised you — was unexpectedly useful."

Household Numbers Workshop

DM

David M.

Australian, long-term Bangkok resident — May 2025

"I have attended both the household numbers and currency programmes. Praewa Group is quite unlike the financial seminars I have sat through over the years — no products are being positioned, no urgency is being manufactured. It is genuinely educational in the plain sense of the word. The small group format means you are not just listening; you are actually working. That matters."

Household Numbers + Currency Programmes

Apinya T.

Thai national, Bangkok — April 2025

"I finished the retirement income programme last month. I am 47 and had been putting off thinking about this for too long. The one-page summary I produced in the last session — my own anticipated retirement income picture, laid out in the ledger format — was not comfortable reading, but it was honest and I needed it. The facilitator was measured throughout, which helped."

Case Studies

Three Participant Journeys

Case Study — Household Numbers Workshop

The Household That Had Never Counted Its Irregular Outgoings

The Situation

A couple in their mid-50s, both working, had a reasonable sense of their monthly bills but had never accounted for irregular outgoings — car repairs, dental costs, festival expenses, travel. Their sense of how much they saved each year was significantly higher than reality.

The Reading

Over two sessions, both partners completed the household template side by side. The irregular outgoings section required them to think back across the full year. The facilitator prompted specific categories they had not initially recalled.

The Outcome

Their completed template showed actual annual savings approximately 40% lower than their estimate. The reflection section prompted a written note about changing how they account for irregular costs going forward. No advice was given on what to do with that information.

"Seeing it written out together in one place was a different experience from talking about it. The numbers don't argue."

Case Study — Currency Reading Programme

The Household Holding Savings in Three Currencies

The Situation

A participant with Thai and Japanese family connections held savings in baht, yen, and a small UK sterling account from previous employment. She found it genuinely difficult to think about her total savings picture because the three currencies moved independently of each other.

The Reading

The three-session programme gave her a framework for reading long-period currency behaviour rather than short-term movements. The session on Thai-baht-denominated savings in relation to foreign holdings was directly relevant to her situation.

The Outcome

She completed a currency notes document reflecting her three accounts and their broad relationship to each other. She described feeling more settled in looking at her total position, having a framework to use rather than reacting to exchange rate movements week by week.

"I stopped checking exchange rates every morning after the second session. That was worth the programme fee on its own."

Case Study — Retirement Income Programme

The Self-Employed Participant with No Provident Fund

The Situation

A self-employed consultant in his late 40s had been contributing to SSO for some years but had no employer provident fund. He was uncertain what retirement income he might expect and had been reluctant to look at the question because he assumed the answer would be uncomfortable.

The Reading

Over four monthly meetings, he worked through each available arrangement in turn — SSO entitlements based on his contribution history, voluntary contribution options, supplementary annuity products — and placed them in the context of his anticipated household drawdown over twenty-plus years.

The Outcome

His one-page retirement income summary showed a gap between anticipated income and anticipated household needs. Having that laid out clearly allowed him to engage with the question constructively rather than avoid it. The facilitator offered no recommendation on how to address the gap — that was for him to consider.

"I had assumed the picture would be grim. It was not as grim as I feared, but it was honest. That is what I needed."
